Mingtown Nanjing Road Youth Hostel Reviews
Easy To Find, Good Location
It was easy to find by Chinese standards, with a good location. The bathroom flooded as I was leaving, but it looked like they were on top of cleaning it up.

Hostel Shanghai - Mingtown Nanjing Road YH is a good place with a fantastic location. The free Wi-Fi is pretty good/strong and isn't difficult to connect to. This is a clean and comfortable hostel with a trendy cafe as a main floor. The staff speak very good English and are all very willing to help. As a YHA, it upholds the standards set, so you won't be disappointed in the facilities. There is a display of various travel and China-related items for sale and a few for free opposite to the front desk. There is also a board with posts on events, notifications and activities happening in Shanghai, which is very useful. Ask for a map at the desk.
The Location
This hostel has a prime location, just two minutes from the Nanjing Road East station on Line Two, which comes from both airports. It's close to tons of shops and it is just off off Nanjing Road, which is a very trendy shopping district. There are tons of shops, restaurants, and corner stores as well if you are heading out to eat. There are really no proper grocery stores in the district, but there are lots of corner stores and bakeries. It's close to a ton of food options -- both Western (mostly on Banking Road) and Asian (there are two places next door). It's steps away from some night food markets, so don't be afraid to walk some alleyways. It is a ten-minute walk to the north end of the Bund Walk.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are not spacious but they are clean and functional with tall wooden bunk beds (which have their own light, shelf, and two power outlets), large-bag lockers, and a small shared side table with stool. The bunks are high, which is great for the bottom bunk people and while the mattresses are a little stiff (typical in China), they aren't uncomfortable. There is bedding provided, including a soft pillow and comforter with sheets. There are private washrooms per dorm and they are split into one toilet room and one shower room with an open sink. There are hooks and soap dishes in the showers for your things. The AC works well.
Common Spaces
The main floor and reception desk looks like a trendy modern cafe/coffee shop, which it is as well but it is also the front desk. They have a menu of decently priced drinks from lattes to alchoholic choices. The food menu isn't extensive, but the breakfasts are good and worth a look. It isn't a party hostel, but it is a relaxed social hostel which encourages meeting other travelers and so it is only as social as you make it. There are tons of comfortable seats in the cafe or there is the second-floor kitchen/lounge/games room, which has plenty of seating options. The third-floor lounge/TV room/laundry area has big sofas and a book exchange as well as the laundry machines (which take coins). The kitchen is functional but not in the best shape. There is a hot water dispenser and fridge.
Summary
This is a very comfortable hostel to use as a base to explore Shanghai. Based solely on the location, it is a winner, but it also has great facilities that are clean and well maintained.
Good location, bad service
When I arrived someone was sleeping in my bed. Man at reception desk told me to go and sleep in messy bedding after this person and he refused to charge her, even on each doors in the hostel there's an information that you have to pay for sleeping in someone's bed.
Sorry, this hostel has closed.
But wait! There are more hostels in Shanghai...
